Destination Wedding Invitations in India: Udaipur, Jaipur, Goa and More

How to plan a destination wedding invitation in India: city by city design ideas for Udaipur, Jaipur, Goa and Varanasi, and the details travelling guests need.

A destination wedding asks more of a guest than an evening at a banquet hall. It asks them to book a flight or a train, take leave, pack for three or four events and trust that it will all be worth it. The invitation is where that trust begins.

So a destination wedding invitation has two jobs. It has to make people want to come, and it has to tell them, clearly and kindly, how. This note is about both: how to let the card carry the place, with ideas for the cities families ask us about most, and which practical details travelling guests are quietly hoping you will include.

Why the invitation should carry the place

When a family chooses Udaipur or Goa, they are choosing a feeling as much as a venue. A lake at dusk. Pink stone in the winter sun. Palms and a sea breeze. That feeling is the reason guests will travel, and the invitation is the first chance to share it.

A card that shows the place does something a line of text cannot. Before a guest reads the date, they already know what kind of wedding this will be: grand and candlelit, or barefoot and easy. It sets expectations for clothes, for pace and for mood, and it gives people something to look forward to for months.

There is a gentle discipline to this, though. The place should be the setting, not the subject. Your names still come first. The best destination cards use the city as a backdrop or a single strong motif, then leave plenty of calm space for the words.

Udaipur: lakes, boats and evening light

Udaipur is, for many families, the destination wedding. It is also the city we have drawn most often, because the water and the palaces give an illustrator so much to work with.

Pichola, luxury wedding invitationSeen herePicholaWedding invitation · Marwari

Pichola is set at dusk on Lake Pichola. A boatman rows a boat heaped with marigolds toward the Lake Palace, and a little egret rides the prow with a flower in its beak. It comes as three cards: invitation, events and thank you. In motion, the boat moves slowly across the water, which feels right for a city that rewards an unhurried pace.

For an Udaipur sangeet, Chandni shows a full moon over a lake palace, a carved chhatri glowing from within, brass lanterns swaying and diyas along the terrace. Kamal, a jade lotus pond where two swans glide toward each other, is quieter and suits families who want the lake without the palace. For the first announcement, Tota is an Udaipur save the date with two parakeets threading a marigold garland. You will find all of them in our Udaipur collection.

Jaipur: pink stone and marigolds

Jaipur weddings tend to be warm, colourful and proudly Rajasthani, and the invitations can be too. The city's pink walls and carved windows are instantly recognisable, even at the size of a phone screen.

In Gulabi Shehar, pink louvered shutters fold back on the Hawa Mahal, where a painted Jaipur elephant in a zari jhool lifts a marigold garland and pigeons settle on the jharokhas. It is a joyful card, and the opening shutters make a natural first moment for an animated invitation.

If you prefer something more intimate, Rajwada is set at a pink haveli jharokha strung with marigolds, where a pigeon flies in carrying your rolled invitation. For the smaller events there is Bel, a mehendi card where two butterflies draw a henna vine across the page, and Baggi, a reception card in deep emerald and gold. See the full Jaipur collection.

Goa: sea air and an easier pace

A Goa wedding usually sets a different tone. Fewer layers, lighter fabrics, more sunsets. The invitation should feel relaxed without looking casual.

Susegad, luxury wedding invitationSeen hereSusegadWedding invitation

Susegad is a Goan sunset: a vintage scooter, two helmets and a frangipani garland, parked under swaying palms beside a whitewashed chapel by the sea. It has three cards: invitation, events and thank you. The scooter and helmets tell guests, without a word, that this is a wedding for two people who like an adventure. Varanasi, and other places worth drawing

Not every destination is a resort. Some families return to a city that means something: a grandparents' home, a holy place, the town where the couple met.

Prabhat, luxury wedding invitationSeen herePrabhatWedding invitation

Prabhat is dawn on the Ganga. A boatman rows a boat heaped with marigolds and lit diyas toward the ghats, leaf-cup lamps drift ahead and temple spires sit soft in the mist. The camera opens on the boat and rises to reveal the ghats. For a Varanasi wedding it carries a sense of blessing as well as place.

Other designs carry a landscape rather than a single city. Chinar has snow mountains over the Dal and a kingfisher rowing a shikara full of wedding flowers. Kasavu opens on a backwater, where a kettuvallam glides in carrying the wedding uruli. And if your place is not in our collection, a custom design can be drawn around it from a blank page.

What destination guests need to know

A wedding in your home city needs a date, a time and a venue. A destination wedding needs a little more, because guests are planning a short trip, not an evening out. Keep the card itself elegant, and put the practical details on an events card or in a short message sent alongside it.

  • Travel. The nearest airport or railway station, and roughly how long the drive is from there to the venue. If you are arranging pickups, say so and give a contact name.
  • Stay. Where guests will be staying, and from which day to which day. If some guests are booking their own rooms, a gentle note on when to book helps.
  • Dress code by event. This matters far more for a destination wedding, because guests have to pack for it. A colour or mood for each event, such as yellow for the haldi, green for the mehendi or "festive, comfortable shoes" for a sangeet on a lawn, saves a great deal of guesswork. Our note on haldi, mehendi and sangeet invitations has more on this.
  • Weather. A short, honest line. Desert evenings in Rajasthan can turn cold in winter, so a shawl is welcome. A beach wedding may be humid. Guests appreciate knowing before they pack.
  • Timeline. Arrival day, each event in order and departure day. When guests can see the whole shape of the trip at once, they plan their leave and travel with much less worry.
  • A contact. One name and number for questions, so guests are not messaging the bride's mother at midnight.
A guest who knows what to pack and when to arrive is a guest who can relax and enjoy the wedding.

When to send, and how many cards

Destination guests need more notice than anyone else. A save the date sent well ahead lets them book travel while fares are reasonable and ask for leave before the season fills up. The main invitation can follow later, once venues and timings are fixed. Our complete guide to digital wedding invitations has a fuller timeline.

For the save the date, a city card works beautifully. Bagh, a peacock crossing a Mughal garden with a sealed scroll in its beak, was made for a Jaipur announcement, and there are more in our save the date collection.

Destination weddings also tend to be several events across two or three days, which is why most of our designs come as a set of two or three cards. A typical suite is an invitation, an events card with the full schedule, and a thank you or welcome card. Many families send the invitation and events card together, then use the welcome card as a greeting when guests arrive.
